Sonata No. 1, for Viola and Piano

In two movements full of movement and intimacy - andante con moto and presto - the composer and Arnold Schönberg's master student Norbert von Hannenheim explores the sound spectrum of the duo viola and piano. Influenced by the technique of his famous teacher, he expresses an independent, highly condensed musical vision. The strict tone series and the original counterpoint, manifold references and thematic cross-references in the recently rediscovered sonata harbor a deep emotionality, shaped by the politically and artistically so changeable decades of the first half of the 20th century.
