The 3 -ianas were written originally as idiomatic explorations of the cello. The first, entitled Bartokiana, mimics eastern European folksong with modal melody and meters that characterize regional languages. The Bachiana is obviously Bach-like. The third :iana employs grace-note pull-offs borrowed from guitar performancepractice. The three works together present a smallish and varied selection of concert pieces.
