Informationen
10 Bagatelles is a collection of outstanding bagatelles arranged for two violins and viola. The collection is designed to complement the growing high-quality repertoire of trios written or arranged specifically for two violins and viola. The choice of pieces, inspired initially by the opening movement from Dvorak's op. 47, comprises bagatelle movements by 10 different composers ranging in era from Beethoven to Bartók. The collection is presented in order of date of first publication; in this context it is interesting to note that although Beethoven is the earliest composer represented, his Für Elise, published postumousley, does not open the collection. The collection has been arranged exclusively from first editions. Original keys have been retained with octave transpositions employed where appropriate and usually, but not exclusively, in the viola. In Puppen Marsch all three instruments are written at pitch. The violin parts of the five movements written originally for violin with piano accompaniment have either been copied to the first violin, as in L'Abeille, or have been shared between the violins. The four movements written originally for piano solo have been arranged more freely in the sense that all three instruments may take a turn to play the main melodies. The need for adaptations of piano textures, however, has been minimal as distinct melodic part writing is always present in the original piano parts. In Dvorak's movement from op. 47 the viola part has been adapted from the original cello part. Bowing slurs have been copied faithfully from the original string parts. Slurs and short legato markings in the original piano parts have been incorporated into the bowing of the string adaptations; otherwise bowing in the piano adaptations is editorial. Editorial additions apart from bowing appear in square brackets. Austin Boothroyd
